Your first choice of a discreet element is far better. I’m not sure why you would choose to make a diagram easy to misinterpret when your goal is to make diagrams easier to understand. Keep the discreet element for scaling don’t merge it with the pointer it’s to easy to miss and would mean that the notation would need to be written to close to the receiver node which is just crowding around that node
