WTF Bananas on a Pizza?
Maybe it is because I’ve been in an adventurous mood lately. Maybe it is because I’ve now completely decided that every convention might just be wrong. But yes I made a banana pizza.
Now, this isn’t some sort of crazy “dessert” pizza, with chocolate sauce and peanut butter. No this is just your regular marinara and cheese pizza. In fact, this entire pizza came from Costco. So let me back up and explain how I got here.
I’m a fan of Costco’s simple cheese pizzas. I like them because first, they are good just as they are but mostly I like them because they are the perfect foundation for whatever crazy pizza I want to make. Although this might be the craziest (or bananas if you prefer) pizza I have made yet. I will usually throw on whatever I happen to have around. Onions, peppers, ham, mushrooms, bacon, pepperoni and extra cheese are among the more normal toppings I’ve used. I also usually have these on hand. I’ve also tried a lot of other less conventional toppings. Shredded beef and turkey for example. Tuna is also unexpectedly tasty. But yes bananas are pretty far out there.
About a week ago I bought a bunch of green bananas from Costco. They have been on my counter ever since. They are still green. When I say these bananas are green I mean not ripe at all. It’s been a week and they still haven’t ripened. I tried to eat one. I could barely peel it. This is when the idea hit me that this banana was more like a plantain. Now I’ve fried plantains before and loved them. I thought I might try frying some of these bananas. But before did that I wanted pizza. Ah-ha! What if I put the bananas on the pizza? So I sliced them and put them on one of those simple Costco cheese pizzas. Now the bananas kind of looked lonely there on the pizza so I started to think about what else I could put on the pizza. What goes with bananas? In about a second I had my answer, the thing that goes with just about everything, bacon. So, in the end, I ended up with a banana and bacon pizza. In the oven it went and 15 minutes later out it came.
So how did it taste? Well to be honest. It was pretty good. But mostly because of the bacon. I could kind of tell that the banana was there. But since bananas don’t become very flavorful until they ripen they didn’t contribute much to the flavor of the pizza as a whole. They were overpowered by the flavor of the bacon. Still, the pizza was good, with a slightly sweet and savory combination.
So would I recommend making banana and bacon pizza? Yes, I would. I might try it again at a future time with bananas that are riper. As it stands it was a good pizza.
