What is the point of having money if you aren’t going to use it to make your life enjoyable?
Orman has given bad and terrible advice for decades. I concluded years ago she was an idiot when her advice didn’t match reality.
Her advice: don’t buy whole life insurance with an annuity it’s a waste
Reality: the whole life policy I bought when my first son was born and I was 22 has been a very solid and stable investment with a guaranteed minimum interest rate of 5% for the last 30 years. Now i am in my 50s and the premium is still the same and the balance grows consistently. It’s been one of the most consistent best returns.
Her advice: don’t borrow from your 401k ever
Reality: I borrowed from my 401k decades ago to bridge a down payment on a new house while selling the old one. I kept it open for a long time when at the same time the stock market was in a crash. I was double dipping, paying myself interest. Simultaneously paying less interest on a loan than was otherwise available and also earning more interest in my retirement account than I could have gotten in the market at the time.
Point is Orman’s advice is narrow and applies in specific circumstances particularly if you are already wealthy but is often not practical for anyone else and in general just platitudes.
I think she thinks she can take it with her.
