To be fair Putin was being logical he was just believing his own lies because no one was there to tell him differently because apparently windows in high rise buildings are very poorly built in Moscow.

He believed (with some legitimate justification) that the west would respond in much the same way as it did in 2014 with the Crimea invasion. He believed his military was in far better condition than it was because he was willfully blind to rampant corruption. He believed his own propaganda that the Russians would be greeted as liberators and believed his intelligence departments were far more capable and accurate than they are so he vastly underestimated the preparedness of Ukraine.

Basically it comes down to one thing. Putin is an idiot living in a fantasy world of his own making, but still a relatively logical idiot. Internally in his own fantasy world of NATO expansion and Nazis in Ukraine, it would all make perfect sense. It just requires a person to be delusional.
