This is not great advice. Leaving nature as it is in many place is good but raking leaves is not just done for aesthetic reasons. It’s crucial home maintenance when you live in a house made of wood, or where it rains or where people walk. Safety, flood control and pest control are all important. Leaves are slippery especially when they decay or are wet and they can conceal hazards. Leaves block drainage leading to flooding they will even make a French drains less effective. Leaves will drift like snow against structures and harbor mice and termites leading to… mice and termites. They also need to be removed from certain types of evaporative septic systems. Aesthetically leaves will also kill many types of grass unless you stop cutting it early and let it grow to at least 6 inches before autumn.

For your own sake, take all this with a grain of salt, rake your leaves away from your home, path ways and any area that needs proper drainage or ventilation. If you have areas away from your home, yes, leave them in a natural state but don’t risk your safety, or your home’s integrity out of some misguided desire to be ecological.

After all, it’s not going to be very ecological when you’re pumping out a flooded basement or spraying for termites the following year and it is going to be a lot more expensive.
