This is an absolutely terrible way to give a compliment to anyone. Comparatives are never appealing because it always inevitably lead to the one being complimented to question in what ways would this person compare them to others and find them lacking. It ends up saying much about the mind of the person giving the compliment. These people tend to see the world as a zero sum game.
