There are many many opportunities for software engineers to work hourly as consultants or on contract. These pay billed hours so if you work 60 hours in a week, you get paid for 60.
On top of that many of those bill rates leave salaried positions in the dust even before counting overtime. And typically the only “benefit” you will be missing is some kind of equity compensation.
