The Russian invasion of Ukraine was already long planned before the US pullout from Afghanistan. The US intelligence community became aware of Russia's intentions around the beginning of June 2021. The original drawdown plan for the US presence in Afghanistan was much slower, more controlled, and gradual but was accelerated (poorly) in preparation and in reaction to the intelligence coming out of Russia.
