The only problem with the west recognizing the independence of Taiwan is that Taiwan would have to declare itself as independent from the mainland to begin with. As it is that’s probably not going to happen. Just as China views Taiwan as a province in revolt, the Chinese government in Taiwan sees mainland China the same way.
