The “left” (at least in the US) has never been “secular”. They try just as much to appeal to the Christian majority (65%) as the right. The difference is that the left want to maintain clear separation between religion and public policy while the right want to see Christian theology dictate government policy in all spheres many going so far as to establish a Christian theocracy.
