The key driver which is a demand for these goods to be cheap. Profits are only one part of the equation. We are perfectly capable of harvesting fish and chocolate, and extracting cobalt and lithium without either child labor or environmental devastation. The only problem then all these things would cost 2 to 3 times as much. I don’t know many people that would pay $20 for a chocolate bar or $3k for a phone.
