Rome shared vast land borders with many unfriendly people. It also was not for most of its existence a democracy. Rome was also never as homogenous as the United States. Most citizens of the Roman Empire could not speak Latin and had more allegiance to their region, religion or ethnic group than to Rome.
Comparing the United States to Rome is to ignore the vast differences between them.
