Reservations about the Apple Vision Pro

Am I excited about the new Apple Vision Pro? Well yes, as a VR and AR enthusiast, I’ve been awaiting the arrival of an offering from Apple for half a decade. Here are my biggest concerns and why I have some reservations and am a little disappointed with what we finally got.

Right off the bat is the insane price tag of $3,500!!! Now, many years ago yes I bought a first-generation HoloLens and it was around $3000 but it was intended for developers and those on the cutting edge. It wasn’t supposed to be a consumer product. The Apple Vision Pro is, I think, supposed to be a consumer product like the Quest.

That brings me to competition. Sure this thing has three competitive advantages, it’s “from Apple”, it has “Full Color Augmented Reality”, and it's relatively small. Oh, wait except Meta also just announced the Quest 3 and it also will support Full Color Augmented Reality and is smaller than the Quest 2. Oh and did I mention the Quest 3 will retail for around $500? Also it looks like the Quest 3 will be available this fall, while the Vision Pro won’t be available till next spring.

Certainly, Vision Pro will find an audience. There are Apple fans that will buy anything the company creates. And there are some compelling use cases. I really want to see what the Mac Virtual Display integration feels like, how well eye tracking…
