No, no, see that's the problem. There is absolutely IS something wrong with it because it is a fallacy. American's interests ARE the world's interests, the world's interests ARE America's interests. There has never been a time in human history where the interests of single nation have so closely aligned with that of the entire planet's as right now. It used to be that we needed a world war to prove that point but I should think that with a global pandemic and global climate change this point should be blatantly obvious at this point. Anyone who thinks they are putting America's interests "first" by ignoring the rest of the world in ANY way has completely lost the thread and can't see the forest for the trees. As soon as someone starts uttering this nonsense it needs to be shut down. Because it demonstrates one thing, the person doesn't understand anything about how the world works and how interdependent we all are on each other. We are well over a century past the point where any nation can afford to withdraw from the world stage. And the more important a country the more harm it does to everyone for them to even toy with the idea.
Now whether or not the US should be the "world's policeman" isn't the question because it doesn't matter really if it should be the case, it is the case. We should stop pretending that this is a dichotomy of indecision here and accept the fact that it is how the world is. Without the US, world trade would grind to a halt. Without the US navy protecting the worlds oceans, and the guarantee of the US dollar backed by freedoms, civil liberties and the rule of law, the world would sink into the post feudal/post colonial mess it found itself in in the 1800's.
