It’s pretty simple, it’s not the language it is the culture. Men/boys always always want to be perceived as older. Women/girls sometimes want to be seen as older and sometimes as younger.

A woman in her 30s that I dated didn’t like when I used the word woman to describe her and specifically asked me to use the word girl because to her a woman was someone much older than her and any time I said it it made her feel old.
