On the flip side, many countries around the world, particularly in Europe, have large populations that speak English as a second language. Of the 1.5 billion English speakers worldwide, only about 400 million are native English speakers. Given the global dominance of the U.S. and the U.K. it makes sense that, particularly in Europe, English is commonly spoken to facilitate trade, commerce, and tourism.

I think you’ve kind of answered your own query here. Because so many people around the world speak English as a second language many people in the U.S. unfortunately just don’t see the need to learn any other language.
