I think you vastly overestimate NATOs capabilities. NATO has never really been on a war footing and it was never been intended to be an offensive force. Since the fall of the USSR most of its members (Germany in particular) have failed to fund their militaries sufficiently instead relying on the US to backfill what they lack.
