I think you are missing a perspective here. What you are talking about is the classic bourgeoisie and this is the group that actually has the most to lose. The fear is not disingenuous.
The poor and the working poor don’t have anything to lose because they don’t have anything.
The wealthy have lots to lose, but they don’t fear losing it.
The middle class particularly the upper middle class (the bourgeoisie) are very fearful of falling backwards and becoming the poor. They increasingly see stratification that prevents them from joining the true wealthy.
