I think this particular sentiment is problematic. This general idea, that the solution is for people to leave these communities for better opportunities rather than that the communities need to have better opportunities, to begin with. This prevailing mythos has been around for decades. It permeates our culture, that people need to "escape" these areas for a better life. On an individual level, it may be true. But it is part of what has been contributing to our divisive politics. Instead of trying to get people to leave these areas maybe we should be focusing on making these towns more economically viable.
