I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this comment. “Spending” IS the economy. That’s literally all it is. The flow of money in exchange for goods and services. There is nothing else to possibly measure because that is literally the entirety of what the economy is.

Here is a slightly wordier definition from Brittanica. “the process or system by which goods and services are produced, sold, and bought in a country or region.”
