I’m not a “career” or even really a hobby writer. I have a day job. In fact, I have a day job and two businesses that take much of my time. I write as a way to practice the art of writing and get ideas and thoughts out into the world.

What do I write about? Well just about anything. I don’t have a theme to what I write about, and I certainly don’t write clickbait or top ten lists. I try to be genuine in what I write and choose to write about. And that is maybe the crux of the problem.

Medium has fallen to the same state of affairs as other publishing platforms such as YouTube, clickbait titles, and endless self-promotion. When was the last time you read a story on Medium that didn’t end in a “Follow Me” or a “Use my subscriber link” plug? This has only gotten worse since Medium announced the 100 subscriber minimum to participate in the partner program. Now everyone who trying to get to the minimum.

I started writing on Medium in 2018. At that time I had a blog with a small amount of traffic and I considered monetizing it in some way. All the options I found are difficult to set up and just take a lot of time. That’s when I found Medium and took the path of least resistance. Medium’s potential to allow me to collect a small amount of money for writing was exactly what I was looking for.
