Absolutely right and I would even argue that those societal pressure and need for conformity are part of that highly symbolic identity. Conformity is often viewed as a negative (at least in some cultures) but there are so many contexts where it indicates solidarity and positive cohesiveness particularly when it is used to identify members of a “tribe” but even beyond that to indicates respect for situations or environments.

It’s why showing up in flip flops at most funerals would be generally frowned on but showing up at the funeral of someone who dedicated their life to surfing wearing the exact same thing would be not just ok, but would be accepted entirely.
