A GPU with dedicated memory requires transferring data from the CPU over the bus. A shared memory system should have higher performance with proper architecture. This is where Intel failed. Intel systems with their iris based video system simply bolted a graphics subsystem into their CPU architecture.

Intel systems are basically a CPU that also supports graphics. The Apple silicon architecture is the reverse of this and more akin to a GPU that also happens to have a CPU.
